Good times do fly fast. Today is already the 7th Day of Chinese New Year. And it is called the Man's Day, where human is believed to be made on this day. Here's what I found on the internet about the significance of this day:

The seventh day of the first lunar month is named renrì (Traditional Chinese: 人日, Pinyin: rén rì), literally Human Day and is considered to be the birthday of ordinary, or common men. The day is also called Day of Men or Men Day.

According to Chinese legends, Nüwa (Traditional Chinese: 女媧; Simplified Chinese: 女娲; Pinyin: nǚwā) is the goddess who created the world. Two legends refer to her creations.
Nüwa and her brother Fuxi survived a devastating calamity, which had wiped out all other life. Retired to Kunlun Mountain they prayed for a sign from the Emperor of Heaven. The divine being approved their union and the siblings set about procreating the human race.
Note: in some texts or according to other legends, Nüwa is considered to be Fuxi’s wife.

According to a different legend Nüwa created certain animals on different days as she was lonesome and wanted the animals as company. On the seventh day after the creation of the world, Nüwa created human beings from yellow clay. With the divine power entrusted to her, Nüwa made the clay figurines to become alive.

Renri is the day, when all common men are growing a year older and the day is celebrated with certain foods according to the origin of the people.
The ingredients of the dishes have a symbolic meaning and they should enhance health.

To honour Nüwa's creation of animals either vegetable dishes will be eaten or a raw fish and vegetable salad called yusheng (simplified Chinese: 鱼生; pinyin: yúshēng).
Yusheng literally means "raw fish" but since "fish (鱼)" is commonly conflated with its homophone "abundance (余)", Yúshēng (鱼生) is interpreted as a homonym for Yúshēng (余升) meaning an increase in abundance. Therefore, yusheng is considered a symbol of abundance, prosperity and vigor.

Fiery Dragon

The Star newspaper featured a story about this dragon that is now displayed in The Pavillion mall as part of its Chinese New Year decoration.

It is the largest dragon in our country. The length of the dragon is impressive. It is hanging from over 5 storeys of the mall. I was in awe with the size of this dragon. Upon stepping into this mall, one would be greeted with beautiful peach blossoms with gold and red lanterns lining both sides of the entrance. Next one sees is this huge dragon with fiery eyes floating on the centre court staring at her. Its sharp claws are in attack position and its mouth wide open, ready to spit fire! For a second, you will be struck in awe with the whole scene as the music of Chinese New Year blaring away!

In fact, the dragon was going after the flaming pearl, that represents wisdom or enlightenment. In the Chinese mythology, if the dragon lose the flaming pearl, it would become helpless and lose its power.

Coincidentally, there was an event at the mall and a Chinese drum performance was presented. I love watching Chinese drum performance. Watch this video and you would understand why.

Ushering Year of the Dragon

Around the world, Chinese is ushering the Year of the Dragon that will arrive on 23 Jan this year. Dragon is the 5th animal sign in the Chinese Zodiac. Being a mythical being, it is the most extraordinary animal sign.

In the Chinese culture, dragon is usually associated with Emperor, male (pheonix, for female) and also a symbol of power. Therefore, Chinese would usher the Year of Dragon with hope of good fortune and happiness. Thus, many Chinese would plan to have weddings, babies and new business venture in this year.

Our local malls are mostly decorated with the powerful dragons that may bring them endless flow of shoppers and business. Here's one taken at the One Utama mall.

Raising the Red Lanterns

It's time of the year for Chinese New Year decorations to be up. This year's Chinese New Year celebration is less than a month after Christmas. So, immediately after New Year, the whole scene in a mall is switched from Santa Claus and Christmas trees to red banners, dragons or peach blossoms. It's amazing how the set designers in each mall work their magic wand! And their work of art do not fail to fascinate me!

This photo was shot at Suria KLCC, a mall under the Petronas Twin Towers.

Every time when I see red lanterns being hung, especially during the Chinese New Year festival, they remind me of the movie Raise the Red Lantern (in Mandarin, 大红灯笼高高挂). Do you have such experience where a scene reminds you of a certain movie that you have seen?

Golden Busker

We hardly see busker in Kuala Lumpur. Last Saturday while bringing 2 friends from Hangzhou, China around town, we stumbled upon this busker on the crossroad of Jalan Bukit Bintang and Jalan Sultan Ismail. Amazingly he stood there like a puppet, not moving and had his whole self painted in gold and his attire was also in gold.

Would you be able to stand still like him while others are throwing glances your way?

Festive Season Shopping

It was a busy weekend of shopping for everyone. Some rushing to get Christmas presents. Some for Chinese New Year clothes. So the mall was cramped with last minute shoppers. Parking was horrible. After driving from floor to floor for 40 minutes, I gave up and tried to exit. However, traffic was at a gridlocked. It was really frustrating. Eventually I decided to park across the mall and take the pedestrian bridge to cross over. Gosh! Lesson learnt! Never ever do your shopping on the last weekend before Christmas!

Here's a photo of the traffic at a slow crawl in Sunway, at both directions. Ha ha...I sound like the traffic report on our local radio station. The difference is I also provided the visual!

Bodek means 'apple-polishing' in Malay language. Saw this cab with an 'apple-polishing free media' bumper sticker! That's just my kind of media! BFM is one of the new radio station in town and it stands for Business FM. It's good to have a media that doesn't listen only to what the government says. A neutral media is very much welcomed! More so, now that the heat of an election is hitting our way!

I became a tour guide for a friend's old classmate who is back from UK. She has not ride on a trishaw for over 30 years. Naturally, she wanted to take a snapshot riding on it. We asked the trishaw man to allow us to take this shot. The kind chap relented and made this lady so delighted throughout her visit in my hometown, Melaka.

When I was young, the ringing bell of the ice cream man excites me! I would rush out to the street to stop him before I went to my Dad for some coins to buy ice creams. Cornetto cones ice cream is a luxury that we only get to enjoy during Chinese New Year. That's when we had more cash from our angpow (red packets) to spend.

The sky is threatening us with a big storm. But people in the KLCC park were enjoy the blowing breeze and the view beyond. Less than 10 mins after shooting this photo, the sky poured endlessly. I waited for over 1 hour for the rain to stop but alas, it didn't. Managed to get a kind Samaritan to share with me her umbrella. She even offered to shelter me with her umbrella all the way to my car! How kind of her! How fortunate for me to meet her! It's a blessing after all!

What a great discovery! It's the KLCC Park! How many of us ever try to be a tourist in the city that we live in? I did that last week while I was in the vicinity of KLCC. It was a wonderful around the park and in the Suria Mall. This is the view that I caught while standing in the Kinokuniya Bookshop! This ethereal scene mesmerized me intensely. I didn't know what I had been missing until then! I find it very calming to take a stroll in the park. Probably its the colour of green and being close to nature that makes me feel peace. Peak Hour @ KTM Station

Peak hour at the Mid Valley KTM commuter train station was a daunting experience. In addition, it was going to be a long weekend with Hari Raya Haji falls on Sunday and Monday would be a public holiday. Many city dwellers are leaving for their hometown and the crowd at the train station was overwhelming. Some couldn't get on the train as it was sardine-packed. It's tough as that meant another 30-40 minutes of waiting for the next KTM commuter train to arrive.

Each time I take a public transport, my frustration never fails to raise! Our public transport systems suck! They still need a lot of improvement. I hope our government will allocate more funds to improve our public transport systems. It is wrong for our government to aim to be a high-income nation when basic needs such as systematic public transport is yet in place! I would rather our government put more effort in improving our basic necessities before it aims for something that may benefit only a small group of people!

Visited this shop that sells Salt Baked Chicken when we visited the old town of Ipoh. This chicken is yummy and it is cooked in a big pan filled with coarse salt. The shop has many pans and you can feel the heat the moment you enter the shop. Imagine these workers have to work everyday surrounded by the intense heat.

For the next few days, I will be sharing photos of vintage Volkswagon Beetle and vans here. There was a Volkswagon competition held at Subang Jaya's Summit Mall last weekend, called Bug-O-Rama. It's my 3rd year attending this event. It is difficult not to be drawn by the many attractively restored vintage vehicles. Some were even from the 30s. Some were even given a touch of humour. Just like this van that I have posted today.

These photos featured a vintage restored Volkswagon van. The owner has restored the van and make it looks friendly with such a clown look-alike design, especially the big round nose on the bonnet of the van. This van will no doubt draws a lot of attention when it goes on the road. In a traffic jam, it would be nice to be stucked with this vehicle next to me. Coincidentally, the plate no. of this van also reflects part of the last name of this owner, i.e. Au Young. I love the choice of design and colour of this van. How about you?

These beautiful coloured tortoise paus (a kind of steamed bread served in dim sum restaurant) were offered by devotees to the Nine Emperors God. There are auspicious wording such as longevity, good fortune and prosperity written on the tortoises' shells. These are the prayers that the devotees made as they offered these paus.

It is common that rainy season coincides with the Nine Emperors God Festival that has just ended on Wednesday. Nine Emperors God Festival is usually celebrated from the 1st to 9th day of the nine month of Chinese Lunar Calendar. During this period, devotees would go on vegetarian meals.

This photo was taken at the Nine Emperors God Temple in Ampang town. It was pouring heavily even though the sun was still shining brightly.

Ban Chean Kuih Seller

Ban Chean Kuih is a pancake folded into half and stuffed with grounded peanuts, sugar, butter and in the case of Penang, sliced bananas. It is common to see vendor on the street selling it in a pushcart. I love the Ban Chean Kuih in Penang for the bananas added into it. This is not available in Subang Jaya or Klang Valley.

I am amazed that Microsoft Office Picture is able to convert my photo into the above. It has a tinge of nostalgic to it. A little bit like the photo captured under the Lomo feature in iPhone. So now I can get a Lomo-ed effect without an iPhone!

This photo was captured when I went exploring behind my friend's house in Johor Bahru, a city located at the south of Peninsular Malaysia. I took my friend and her nephew along. Both of them have stayed there for years, yet have never gone to check out the railway track! Ha ha..I have spread my sense of adventure to them!

This is a Nasi Kandar restaurant, located next to Kapitan Keling Mosque in Penang. The name of the restaurant is 'Beratur', which means queue. This restaurant does live up to its name. A friend of mine brought a visiting guest here and had to queue for 45 minutes before they got their food. We were here during the fasting month of Ramadhan and found the shop sign stated the opening hour is at 10pm. Thus we didn't get the chance to taste the Nasi Kandar here. Would you queue for 45 minutes in order to buy some delicious food?

Nasi Kandar is a popular northern Malaysian dish, which originates from Penang. It is a meal of steamed rice which can be plain or mildly flavored, and served with a variety of curries and side dishes.

The word Nasi Kandar, came about from a time when nasi [rice] hawkers or vendors would kandar [balance] a pole on the shoulder with two huge containers of rice meals. The name has remained and today the word Nasi Kandar is seen on most Tamil Muslim or "Malaysian Mamak" restaurants and Indian-Muslim stall meals.

The rice for a nasi kandar dish is often placed in a wooden container about three feet high, giving it a distinctive aroma. The rice is accompanied by side dishes such as fried chicken, curried spleen, cubed beef, fish roe, fried prawns or fried squid. The vegetable dish would usually be brinjal (aubergine), okra (lady fingers or "bendi") or bitter gourd. A mixture of curry sauces is poured on the rice. This is called 'banjir' (flooding) and imparts a diverse taste to the rice.

We were taking a stroll at the Penang Botanical Garden when we crossed paths with these couples in bridal costume. They were with a photographer and it seemed like they were having an outdoor photo shoot there. The weather in Penang was cool and it was the raining season then. If not, we would see these couples would be drenched in sweat. And instead of smiles, we may be seeing frowns! Have you had your wedding photos taken at the outdoor? How did it feel? Was it fun?

The 'Kueh Chap' Man

'Kueh Chap' is a famous Teow Chew (those whose ancestors hailed from Chaoshan, eastern Gangdong, China) delicacy comprises of noodle made of rice flour, served with soya sauce based soup, topped with pork meat and offal. It is yummy! 'Kueh Chap' can be found in places where many Teow Chew settles down e.g. Penang, Johor Bahru, Singapore, Hadyai & Bangkok in Thailand. I always try to eat it when I am in these places as one can hardly find 'Kueh Chap' being sold in Subang Jaya.

Today is the celebration of Moon Cake Festival, that is also known as Mid-Autumn Festival. This is the photo of the moon captured tonight. It's a bit hazy these days and today's level of haze is rather high as everything seems blurry and the weather is a hot and stuffy. Not a good day to be outdoor enjoying a parade with lanterns. I am missing my childhood when my brothers and I would be parading around our neighbourhood with lanterns. Oh, how I miss those days!

Met this family at the USJ8 Police Station's Hari Raya Open House. The whole family is dressed in red theme colored clothes. They are festive looking and the kids are really enjoying the Hari Raya celebration. The Malaysia Railway (Keretapi Tanah Melayu - KTM) building is beautifully decorated with Malaysian flags in conjunction with Malaysia's 54th National Day celebration today. As this year's National Day coincides with the Hari Raya celebration, there is no National Day parade today. Instead, National Day parade will be held on 16th September during the Malaysia Day celebration. The whole Subang Jaya is so quiet today. Many has left for their hometown for Hari Raya celebration or gone away for holiday.

Kangkung Sotong (Water Convolvulus & Cuttlefish)

While visiting Penang Island (an island located about 400 miles north of Kuala Lumpur), my friend brought me to Gurney Drive for dinner. Gurney Drive has a big hawker food court that serves all kind of delicious Penang delicacies.

I ordered this 'Kangkung Sotong'. It is a combination of blanched water convolvulus (kangkung) and cuttlefish (sotong) served with a spicy, sour and sweet sauce topped with ground peanuts. Although 'Kangkung Sotong' can be found in many parts of Malaysia, I hardly eat them. But on seeing these cuttlefish, I just had the craving for it. And the one that I ordered was really tasty! Yum, yum! If you sighted any hawker stall in Malaysia where cuttlefish and water convolvulus are being displayed together, make sure you try it out. Trust me, you will have no regrets!

Increase in Crime Rate

Crime rate in our country has been increasing. More so in suburb like Subang Jaya. I caught a banner in USJ2 seeking residents to come together to beat crime. We hope our police can do a better job in lowering crime rate.

In fact last month, my car was broken into when parked within the compound of our house. Nothing much was stolen but it actually shaken us up that we are not spared by the robbers. These days, I would easily be awaken by noise in the night. Have you experienced any robbery or break-in before?

Was awakened by my sister that a procession was on-going by devotees of Goddess Mariamman. Here are the scenes. We also visited the temple in Kg. Chitty to watch the night procession. Although Goddess Mariamman is a Hindu Goddess, but over here, even Chinese who lives in this village partake in the celebration.

It is Thaipusam celebration for Hindus in Malaysia today. Once again, I joined some photo enthusiast from our community forum for a photo outing to Batu Caves to join in the fascinating celebration. These are some of the photos that I took today. We was already awake at 4am and we hit the road by 4.30am and only finished at 1pm. It was a tiring day but no regret that I went to Batu Caves again this year.

I am slacking in my photo posting lately. My apologies to all. For the next few days, I will try to post more photos from the Thaipusam celebration in Batu Caves. If you are ever in town during Thaipusam, try your best to visit Batu Caves. Even though this year it's the 2nd time I joined in the celebration, it didn't cease to amaze me! The One Utama mall featured Charles Dickens Christmas with beautiful songs from Oliver Twist being played in the background. It reminds me of the cute boy who played Oliver and singing away...food, glorious food!

As we celebrate this festive season, let's also be reminded of all the blessings that we have. Do also have some thoughts for the less fortunate, who may be suffering from hunger or even the cold out there. It may not be snowing here in Malaysia but the heavy rains do make the evening chilling. I wish those who are homeless out there will find some warmth during these cold nites.

Ampang - 9 Emperors Festival

I have been wishing to go to the 9 Emperors Festival in Ampang for sometime and this year my wish came true. Thanks to the group of photography enthusiasts from USJ.com (my township community forum) that my wish of going to this Festival and also Thaipusam celebration in Batu Caves came true this year!

I love shooting photos of this Chinese opera actress. She was the first actress that is friendly and instinctively posed for our cameras. I met many photography enthusiasts who flocked the backstage during the Nine Emperors Festival at Ampang New Village recently. We were fortunate that this actress was so sporting to let us take her photos. In my opinion, she is such a professional model! And she is pretty too! She let me practised potrait shooting with here that evening.

What attracted me more is the electronic display that says, "What do you prefer? The pain of discipline or the pain of regret?" Which would be your choice? Let me hear form you.

Here's a trishaw that has the Satu Malaysia (One Malaysia) symbol on it. This One Malaysia concept is brought upon by our current Prime Minister when he took office last year. The aim of his One Malaysia campaign is to encourage Malaysians of all races to stand as one regardless of our race, colour or culture. I sincerely hope that he is not doing this as a political gimmick but sincerely want unity among the different races to move the country forward.

A Piece of Thailand in PJ

If you are missing Thailand, yup, I meant food, language, people or snacks, you can pop by at Wat Chetawan (Thai Buddhist Temple) for a feel of Thai in the middle of Klang Valley. But you have to be there on a Sunday morning or afternoon.

This is when Thai people who resides in Malaysia will have stalls set up to sell Thai food and products along the street outside this temple.

Recently I went there to have a bowl of yummy Thai Koay Teow Soup (Flat Noodle Soup) after the Walk for Sight event. As the food is prepared by vendors who originated from Thailand, the authenticity of the food is retained. Not only was the food carries the flavour of Thailand, but the whole place feel like Thailand as some of the vendors only speak Thai. So are some of the temple visitors who were at the stall.

Check out this place if you happen to be in Jalan Gasing on a Sunday morning.

In the photo above, you can see grilled pork on skewers, Thai sausage, steamed glutinuous rice or white rice and Stir Fry Chicken with Basil available for take-aways. Mats are laid out on the grass behind the stall for clients who want to eat their food on the spot. It's so Thai to me!!!

We were at the Toyota Classic concert that was held in the Petronas Philharmonic Hall this evening. After the concert, I just can't resist going out to capture some photos of the Petronas Twin Towers. Each time I am here, I get different shots of the buildings. As usual, the building didn't fail to amaze me with its beautiful structure. With all the lights lit up, it looks more spectacular at nite.

Walk for Sight

10-10-10 - 10th Oct 2010 seems to be such a special date ~ in Chinese, it can be interpreted as "Perfect". As such many events were held in Klang Valley on this date, especially weddings. However, it was not a wedding that I went to. I spent the morning joining the 'Walk for Sight' event organized by the Lions Club.

The purpose of the event was to raise fund to build facilities for visually impaired in Malaysia, to have mobile eye check-up facility and to create awareness about visually impairment.

Participants did the walk in pair. One of us is blindfolded and our partner would lead us to walk through PJ New Town. The total route was about 3.3km. I shared the walk with my friend. My friend started being blindfolded first. Half way through I took over. It is not easy to walk when what I could see was only total darkness. I had to depend on my hearing and also support from my partner. It was a relief when we reached PJ Civic Centre and was greeted by fellow organizers that we had made it to the finish line. That was also when I could remove my blindfold and end my journey as a blind person.

Imagine what life is like for a visually impaired person who has to live his life in total darkness, knowing that he will never get remove his blindfold to see the light? That thought makes me feel grateful that I have my eyesight and I shall take real good care of my eyes!

Our neighbourhood mosque organized a Hari Raya Feast for all of us and nearby residents who frequented the mosque. We were fortunate enough to learn about this event the night before from a fellow neighbour.

It is great for the mosque to organize such an event and to extend invitation to residents of all races and religions to join in the festive occasion. My only wish is that the publicity could have been better so that more residents are aware of it and able to join in the celebration. It was a great time for us to meet up with our fellow neighbours and made friends with them through this event. We met some very warm people there. It made us felt so welcomed and I hope I would be able to join in more Hari Raya celebration organized by this mosque in the years to come.

Pink is the Theme

October is the Breast Cancer Awareness month. Malls and even KL Tower is supporting this campaign to create awareness among women to do self-breast check in order to detect breast cancer at its early stage. Early detection can help the patient to survive breast cancer.

This photo was a window display of a lingerie boutique in The Mid Valley Mall. It features a wishing tree with words of hope, love and health awareness for all where breast cancer is concerned.

Do remember that early detection of breast cancer can save life. Create awareness about self-breast check.

Kg. Morten's Bridge

The new bridge of Kg. Morten looks really good. The beautiful hibiscus flowers design matches the traditional village houses of Kg. Morten (a Malay village located in the town of Melaka).

On the right you can see a banner that says let's find and eradicate Aedes mosquitoes breeding ground. The Aedes mosquitoes are carrier of Dengue fever. This fever can be fatal if not treated soon. There has been over 100 deaths in Malaysia this year. The government has increased the fine of household that are found to be breeding ground of the Aedes. Aedes larvae strive in stagnant water. So containers or pots with collected water especially in the current rainy season becomes breeding ground for Aedes.

I survived Dengue fever 2 years ago. So I can tell you that it's no fun to be down with fever and having aching joints, and at the same time fearful of internal haemorrhaging! I had to be hospitalized for a week. Fortunately I didn't have any internal haemorrhage that requires blood or platelet transfusion.

So, please check that there is no containers collecting water in your house that may be potential breeding ground for Aedes mosquitoes. Help to eradicate Aedes.

Ramada's Reflection

The reflection of Ramada Renaissance Hotel in Melaka River. This hotel is the first 5-star hotel that operated in Melaka. It's a nice walk along the Melaka River after Melaka Tourism beautify the riverside. Pedestrian pathway and street lamps are placed along the river. If you have the chance to visit Melaka, do take a long stroll along the river. Savour the beautiful sights that greet you.

Theme Day - Oct 2010 : Graffiti

Melaka Government is making very good progress in beautifying Melaka Riverside. One of the task is to paint the buildings along the river with such graffiti, depicting the history of the Old Melaka Sultanate.

In the 15th century, Melaka used to be a major trading port due to its strategic location at the Straits of Melaka. This is where traders from the far east, i.e. China and west, i.e. India, Arab, Persia and Portuguese would come to trade here. The Chinese Emperor of Ming Dynasty even offered Princess Hang Li Po to Sultan Mansur Shah for marriage. That is the scene shown at the bottom part of this graffiti.

On the top right, is the Chinese Admiral of Ming Dynasty, Zheng He and his Great Armada. He travelled to Melaka and established a trading post during the 15th century. It is said that Zheng He started his exploration a century before Columbus, Magellan or Vasco da Gama. He led one of the greatest fleet of junks that the world has ever known and his voyage was featured in a National Geographic documentary. Or you can track his voyage from China all the way through South East Asia to India and finally to the West Coast of Africa on this map.
